STRUGGLING WITH SIN
In Romans 7:14-24 Paul shares with us his testimony about his sinful nature. He says, “The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it. And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature.”
So I don’t know about you, but when I read this I felt like I wasn’t alone. The whole time I had been reading the Bible and I was like, “Paul knows his stuff and he is just the ultimate disciple. He is preaching God’s word and he is perfect and flawless.” Reading this allowed me to relate to him and realize that he was human just like me. I can say that on the day I gave my life to Christ, he delivered me from the strongholds and bondage that I had been living in. A weight had been lifted up off of me. I didn’t swear anymore. I wasn’t angry anymore. I was free. I felt so good! Amen!
But once you give your life to Christ and Satan sees that it’s not a game and you are truly living your life for God, trust and believe he and his whole crew of demons are going to come for you guns-a-blazing Mafioso style! LOL! He will send people your way who know what buttons to push. Oh, and he won’t just send any old regular person either, he will send those who you love, and care for deeply. Once that happens, the spiritual war begins. Those who I cared about would be able to get me to engage in mouth battling with them. I wouldn’t swear at them or anything like that, but I would lose my cool and freak out and scream and yell and bring up past offenses like they were going out of style. I would feel just like I used to. Someone on the outside looking in would not have been able to tell that the Holy Spirit was living on the inside of me let alone if I even knew what the Holy Spirit was at all!
I had made the decision not to engage in any kind of physical activity with any men once I had given my life to Christ because in the Bible it says that such things are only to be shared with your husband. I was fine with that. But what did the enemy come up to me and say once I had made that decision and had been living with that decision for over a year? He said, “Well, maybe every now and then you should just have someone check things out down there. Start up the engine. Make sure things are still running smoothly. You don’t want it to close up!” I kid you not. Those are the kinds of thoughts that would creep in and out of my mind. Then the enemy would send people into my life who I had been intimate with and they would say all of the right things and then I would have a decision to make. My girlfriends would tell me to go out and get busy! They would say, “Girl, there ain’t nothing wrong with a little sin every now and then!” I am telling you, it was hard. I would not always do what I knew God wanted me to do. Afterwards, I’d immediately feel guilty, and then I would go home and read Romans 7:14-24 and be angry and disappointed in myself. I would get down on my knees and pray. I would ask God to forgive me for having not “killed” my flesh. I would ask God to forgive me for ignoring the voice of the Holy Spirit. One thing that I have learned about the voice of the Holy Spirit is that it starts out so loud and as you ignore it, it gets quieter and quieter until eventually you either tune your ears in to obey, or you block His voice out altogether.
All sorts of things will creep up when you are living your life for God. The enemy will try each and every avenue until he finds out what and who your weaknesses are. Once he is made aware of what and who those weaknesses are, he will exploit them, expose them and use them against you every single chance he gets. We are not born perfect, but God gives us the opportunity to be made perfect again and again. If you have areas in your life where you know that the enemy is defeating you in and that sin is ruling over you, pray about it. Pray and pray some more. Fast. Ask God to help you. Ask God to deliver you from it. Reach out to other believers and ask them to pray on your behalf. Do not go to church every Sunday and let that sin be a part of you. Do not be ashamed or feel embarrassed. Tell someone.
Everyone in the church has been through something. They may be delivered now and you can’t tell that they have been through anything but who do you think got them there? God! God is the only one! Do not hold onto sin. Let it go. Free yourself. Know that you are not alone. Whatever it is, someone, somewhere has gone through it, is going through it or will go through it. As Solomon said, “Nothing is new under the sun.” Share your story and get rid of that sin once and for all. It may not be easy, because those spirits don’t want to leave. If they have a legal right to be there, they won’t leave. You have to command them to leave, and you have to let go of whatever it is in your life that is giving them the legal right to be there.
At the end of the passage, Paul says, “Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” So you see; the answer is right there. Is there any problem too great for our God? The answer is no. So seek Him, and He will surely deliver you. He is the only one who can. Be blessed!
